Game 37

Junt and I played a straight up battle at 75pts a side. His Imperial Guard vs the Howling Griffons.

Sadly I forgot to take many photos during the game but it was a right shooting match. Both sides taking a lot of damage but I'd gotten lucky early on and taken out most of a lascannon squad which would have given me some real headaches if it had stayed around.

The Guard tanks dished out a lot of damage but the Griffons thunderfire and whirlwind barrages proved too much. Swooping around the Storm talon made itself invaluable delivering some great shots against the tanks.

A win for the Griffons but at a high cost.

Game 36

More 40K as we had the taste for it!

Game 36 used the diagonal deployment, the mission cards and objective markers. Junt's IG stood shoulder to shoulder with the scarlet and gold of the heroic Howling Griffons.

This isn't a bias report honest.

Arrayed against them were Urn's soulless clanking Necrons bringing with them the unpleasant whiff of damp compost. Urging them on and whispering evils ideas were the Silverfox's forces of chaos including ..... shudder....the Khorne Berserkers.

From the outset both forces pushed forward with a lot of fire being concentrated in the centre. The power Demolishers made some early gains against the Khorne forces but the Necrons proved unrelenting once again.

On the Imperial right flank the marines pushed forward against a formation of chaos cultists hoping to break them and gain some objectives.

However the dark forces had focused their attacks in the centre and the berserkers dealt out some horrible damage.

Despite the Ogryns helping mop up the berserkers the dark forces took the day.

Great game. Poor old Silverfox took the brunt of the fire as the Necron blob squads make themselves less appealing as a target with their unwillingness to STAY DOWN!!! Gits!

Game 33

Another round of Nu-40K at Urns.

This time Junts IG teaming with those pesky undying Necrons whilst The eldritch Farseer Silverfox added his eldar to mine.

I didn't bring a Wraithknight this time cos......god didn't they go on about it last time! ;-)

The Tanks of the IG made themselves a target for the Eldar lances partly due to the Necrons stubborn unwillingness to DIE!!!

Don't remember the result but we were enjoying the new rules.

22000pts

So the day of the Mega game arrived with much excitement! We had something in the region of 22,000 points on the table

The board had been set up on Saturday with many of the forces unboxed and ready to go on Sunday morning. We mustered, for the most part (eh Urn? ;-), just after nine but it still took us a while to deploy. The orks deployed first and it was a horrible sight to behold especially as BFG & the Silverback were using the Green Tide formation.

'Orrible right?

And that was just one sector of the four set up along the table. massed Orks supported by a stompa, grot guns, squiggoths and herdz of grotz to sit on the objectives on their side of the table.

The Eldar's knees were trembling somewhat as they camped across from the horde.

Thankfully the IG had brought there ever so courageous Ogryn to act as a fantastic distraction and speed bump slowing the tide of green down.

Mean while in the center sectors....

....it was quite-ish in the fields but in the city.....

....a fight was brewing up with a stompa led charge of Killer Kans supported by non-other than Ghazaghull and some of his equally ugly friends!

The fighting spilled out of the city into the sparsely populated Badlands where the IG and Eldar struggled to contain a grot battle tank and some Killer Kans with the forces they had in the region.

A win for the Orks 28 - 20 at the end of turn three. We played the Eldar turn four, as we had a bit of time, but they only pulled back to 28 - 25 so it is safe to say that even with more turns the Orks would have had it in the bag.

Great game and always great to get the big toys out!

'Til the next one!

57th Penal Battalion (Abhuman) deployed

You may remember that quite while ago I made a couple of posts about the beastmen (abhuman) squad that I'd been inspired to start and use as Ork allies for my Guard..... They are finally done :)

The most embarrassing thing is that they've been sitting waiting for flock (yes, just flock, the rest of the base was complete) for about 3 months.  Just how rubbish is that?

Anyway, here they are, still on the painting table!

As the Nob of the unit, I decided to use a commissar.  What right thinking imperial commander would let a unit of abhumans loose without a commissar to ensure they stick to the imperial creed?  I had one with a power fist (Klaw) that I hadn't used for ages, so he fit the bill perfectly.

"Right you 'orrible little maggots - Forward for the Emperor!"

The other half of the unit
Group shot
The HQ unit that I'm converting is taking a little more time..... But perhaps getting a little bit of room back on my paint station now this lot are ready to troop off to their carry case will inspire me to get on with him!

Imperial Guard allies

Well, new 40k certainly has me flitting from project to project, all before the last one is finished.  My sisters, chaos, dark eldar and orks all need updating to take advantage of the exciting new 40k rules......

.....and in the case of all except the sisters, actually get me 1,500 points of painted stuff to use on the table!  I was quite ashamed when I realised all those half painted models hanging around armies I thought I could use.....

.....But anyway, who managed to elbow their way rudely to the top of the pile?  Imperial Guard did.  Yep, those chaps who I have about 4k of stuff painted for decided that they wanted more stuff.  So I went with the flow and they are, currently, at the head of the painting queue.

So what was I doing for them?  Tanks?  Nope, I have plenty of those.  More Guardsmen?  Nope, I also have plenty of those. More flyers?  No, I think 2 is quite enough for our little group :)

It's actually a project that I thought about a long time ago, but new 40k has given it a new lease of life.  I'm talking about Inducted Beastmen.  As I'm from the Rogue Trader era, I remember the White Dwarf Guard army list with beastmen squads sent forward armed only with two hand weapons and a bad attitude to duff up the enemies of the Emperor in penance for being filthy mutants.  What fun times they were :) Beastmen then disappeared from the canon in the recent editions unfortunately, but I had decided to convert some up to serve as line guardsmen.  Sadly I just didn't get around to it as they would have just been more of the same line guardsmen that I had already.  So, why did new 40k change things?  Two reasons, the first being the re-emergence of "accepted" stable mutations in the big book which included beastmen and allies.  I had a chance to do the beastmen, make them different from a rules perspective and have them legal.  Perfect :)

So I chose Orks with shootas.  Why?  Because it fits.  I could arm them with lasguns which they blazed away with, buring out the power packs and being wildly inaccurate compared to the disciplined shooting from the line Guardsmen, hence the reduced BS and the fact they have shoota profiles instead of lasgun ones.  They are also tougher than guardsmen and enjoy a fight more, so the profiles worked perfectly.  So, here are the fruits of my labout so far

Fear us!  We come fresh from a number of other projects...
So, lots of beastmen bodies from a previous army (warhammer doubles circa 2009) and catacan arms and I was away.  As the beastmen figures have their arms swept back, I mostly used the arms holding the gun in one hand where possible, but converted and gree stuffed others when I ran out, as shown below

We have water bottles and nifty pouches
I also added as  many imperial water bottles, knives and pouches as I could to further add to the Imperial Guard feel of them.

I also then added some brass etch imperial eagles after filing down the eight pointed stars or skulls on their belt buckles
Our belt buckles say we love the emperor
So, next up is painting and the tabletop!  I'm mulling a couple of ideas for the Nob and mandatory HQ you need with allies (most likely a warboss) but I'll add them to the next blog post.

Veterans R Us

So here are my IG veterans.  2 squads with 3 meltas and 3 plasma respectively.

Now, there are 2 points to note when you look at these...

1.     The heads are from Westwind; their SGS WW2 Germans with gasmasks.

2.    I used my new found airbrush skills to spray the sandy colour uniform.  I then used the airbrush to paint the shoulder pads, the chest and back plates and weapons.  There was minimal overspray which was easily sorted with the sandy colour on a brush.  20 guardsmen with detailing in less than 3 hours..... awesome!
