Crashed ship part 2

I’ve been forging ahead trying to get the crashed ship finished.

This involved many evenings dry brushing and weathering with powders and washes. I’m fairly pleased with how they’ve come out.

Only one left to do now – the nose section but I’ve run out of black spray and I’m waiting on a delivery of more cans.

After this I need to get a desert mat sorted for the table. I’ve seen several but I still have a hang up about spending £50+ on a mat even if they are really detailed.

2018 so far.....

I’ve been pretty busy since Xmas but I’ve lacked any real focus. I just have too many fun projects that I want to work on. This does mean that I’ve got lots of progress but nothing getting finished.

I’ve wanted to do a siege game for Horus Heresy (HH) ever since I started collecting an army. I’ve decided to make this a reality, hopefully this year, and as such I’ve purchased some walls, gun emplacements and a TTCombat Gothic Garage which I think will make a good gatehouse. I’m planning to use this on my 3x5 dining room table so this should stretch across the narrow table side just fine. The plan is to have the attackers play up the length of the table.

The scenario will need some thinking about but, given the sterling work being done 30K Heresy Forum to create 8th Edition rules, I should be able to use the fortification rules from the back of the 8th edition 40K rulebook as basis for something fun.

The HH setting does inspire me and I want to vary the types of games we play. Several years ago I’d made some starship interiors scenery. Sort of my own take on a modular Space Hulk type thing. It got messed around with a few times but then stored in the loft. It struck me that it would be pretty good as a Zone Mortalis and this compelled me to bring it down from the loft.

I hadn’t varnished it at the time of making it, something that I regret now. My loft is pretty dry but I think the inherent moisture in the plaster it was made from was enough to let the mould creep in. Sadly some pieces were lost but most were recovered, repaired and giving two coats of Varnish. One Gloss and one Matt. Hopefully that will protect it in future. I also have a plan to add some larger boards to the ZM set so that it can fill an entire 6x4 table.

All this HH planning has also had the effect of galvanising me to get more stuff painted for it. I did the Iron Warriors(IW) infantry last year but they sorely need some reinforcements. Now I like the idea of dreadnoughts stomping down ZM corridors in support of the troops so the couple of dreads I had in need of stripping pushed their way to the front of the queue and got themselves a nice bath in Dettol. They came out pretty clean.

Sitting around for a while has been a tray of terminators for both the Iron Hands & Iron Warriors. These were kit bashed together from a bundle of Scibor bodies that I won on Ebay cheap, Anvil heads and Shoulder Pads all coupled with GW Termie arms and weapons. I like the notion that 30K was a time of innovation and invention giving rise to lots of variation to the weapons and armour that were used.

So the IWs have received two coats of Gun Metal Grey so far. Onto stripes next for them. The IH Termies are started with a heavy dry brushing of Bronze and then a light dry brush of gold. This picks out the trims and lots of the details. Next comes the red colour for the main armour plates to represent the blood of Manus that these surviving IH refuse to wash off until the traitors have been wiped out we all know how well that goes!).

I was given, by a very kind soul, some GW scenery at Xmas. The lovely gothic machinery terrain. It is wonderfully characterful and was one of the first things I put together once the silliness of Xmas subsided. Love these models and I’m looking forward to using them with the ZM terrain.

My first wargame of the year was a cracking game with BFG and I using my Seraphon to thwart the machinations of The Silverback and Silverfox’s Chaos forces. Cracking game which I neglected to take any photos of. Still it was enough to spur me on with some additions to my Lizards.
A homemade Dread Saurian has been staring at me from the shelves of holding for some time now so he was treated to a lick of paint to get him started. I was also treated to some Seraphon Cavalry for Xmas by another kind soul and those have been constructed and undercoated. Painting 40 cavalry at once is a bit daunting so I need to get some things cleared before starting them.

My ongoing endeavours to put together a stonking urban cityscape is still also progressing with the additional of some street furniture from Blotz.

I picked up lots of additional bits for the city at Colours and Warfare and decided to get them under way. This is them all washed and they’ve been spray undercoated now as well. They should add lots of character.

Well I also need some people to populate this city so I’m working on getting the civvies and heroes finished as well so we can get on and have some games. I think some of the folks in this part of town may have dubious professions…..

One of the Hero (or Villian) figures I’ve had for a while was a suited hitman type of guy but I didn’t want to have him in a plain suit. Well….there was only one choice really wasn’t there. Let me introduce you to….

Mr Patriot!

It took the best part of two hours but it was worth it. It still needs neatening up with some white and the colours could do with another coat but he won’t take much to finish after that.

I seem to have entered one of my more productive phases again, which is great, but because I’ve not had my painting mojo for a while I have been concentrating on building. This has meant that the painting queue has grown considerably. I’m estimating that I have 300+ prepped and undercoated waiting to be done. I really should address that!

So goals for this year? Well last year I painted 366 figures. Great but I brought loads as well. Time for a new tactic. I’m going to track Net items painted. So a minus for a painted one and a plus for any new ones brought.

So the street furniture places me at -15…..but…..

….those 20 mkiii marines I didn’t think I’d win on Ebay but did takes it back to +5.
So this year I must be productive and also resist buying too many figures.

Wish me luck.

338! Not too many to go!

I've hit the 338 mark for my painting challenge this year.

33 Epic Ork speed freaks ready for action. Still loads to paint for this force but I'll keep plugging away.

Only 27 figures to go!

These could have been finished weeks ago if I hadn't let myself get soooo distracted by the VSF Aeronef project. Three of the ten kits are finished and on the Blotz site. Three more have been submitted and I'm just waiting to hear back from Blotz on their progress. I still have the Prussian and Antartican ones to do but I'm pretty much settled on how I want them to look so I just need to get my head down and draft them.

My mind is turning towards getting some rules for this VSF game so I'll have to head off to the forums to do a bit of research. In the mean time I'm squeezing in a little time to progress the MDF aeronefs that I have already.

Last night I started the flyers but they will take a while. However I did get to do the Tesla Guns. Black under coat spray and then dry brushed bronze and brass. Simples.

A break from painting figures for....

...a chance to paint even more scenery!!

Lots got done over the last month or so.

My TTCombat cargo ship got finished and weathered with rust.

Jolly good fun it was too!
I'm counting this as a figure because it is a vehicle and besides....I spent ages on it!
Tally up to 227!

Transfers got added to the Spartan Spaceship.

I need to go back and put weathering and wear damage on this now.

Finished off some skips for my city terrain set.

I was pretty pleased with how these turned out in the end. Relatively small and unimportant scenery pieces but nice to have them turn out so well.

A waste tower for either the junkyard or dockside.

The photo is rather washed out by the bad light in the photo but the rust effect powders do look great once applied.

At work I've started putting together some scenery kits that the Silverfox has donated into the group to be used. Not the greatest kits to put together from wargaming model mods but they'll be fine once they've been made and painted.

And.....then back to painting figures.

30 Dire Avengers.

Cos....you know.....you can't have too many Eldar. Right?

I've got 142 days left (To December 10th) to paint 138 figures. These Eldar will come off of that total shortly so I've still got several months to clear the last 109 to reach the magic 365 total.

After these I've got about fifty infantry figures to paint for 30K and then the plan is to get some superheroes painted to use on the nearly complete city terrain.

Lots of progress this year.

I also fallen behind with blogging about the games we've been having so I'll have to redouble my efforts there. With the arrival of nu40K we've been getting a fair few games in.

13 Sept 2016

Some weekend purchases.

That time had rumbled around again when the (usually) annual Colours show takes place at Newbury racecourse. I do like to go as it feels like a small pilgrimage. I know that there are bigger shows but it is local and familiar to me.

I've been going to Colours since i was a kid, back then it was called Armageddon and was held at the Hexagon theater in Reading. I loved it back then as it was always crammed in with sellers all over the place in different nooks and crannies! Its moved on quite a lot with loads more space at the Newbury Racecourse but many of the original sellers still showing every year. I'm not currently playing any GZG games but it is always nice to browse their stand. It's Nostalgic.

This year I got a few bits and pieces, mainly MDF scenery cos' man I loveeee the MDF scenery!

Paints, scenery and cheap foam trays. I saw the demo game for Hysterical Games' Fantasy WWII game. The game doesn't appeal to me, although it looked fairly fun, but they had dock cranes on their table that were cool! I asked and the chap who made the board said that they were a Sarissa rail based steam crane coupled with a TTCombat Oil Rig tower. Needless to say I ended up buying the Sarissa part of that equation. Unsurprisingly the TTCombat part is currently on order.

Also brought was a American style mobile home to go with the scrapyard terrain set I am putting together. Two sci-fi scenery kits and some resin fences for the scrapyard completed the scenery purchases apart from.......

Nee Nar!! Hands up punks!!!

£6 from some stall......whose name completely escapes me. Absolute bargain for a 28mm vehicle. Thinking that I missed a trick not buying the £5 car that they also sold.

I also got to make some small progress on Scenery September. Not much tho'.

TTCombat urban street dressing from their Building Site Set. I'm intending to knock up a 'hole' as road works for this lot to go with. Just something to break up the open road sections when we play Pulp City or any future Zombie games.

TTCombat

Urn recently pointed me in the direction of TTCombat scenery. Very nice collection of scenery available on their website or Ebay.

Reasonably priced, pretty and easy to put together. The perfect MDF kits. Needless to say....money got spent. These kits go together really well and the scale of them is pretty impressive given the price.

Given that their range is a good size already and that it is still growing means that this company is one to watch!

Lovely little Ambulance complete with a gurney. I'm going to leave the top of the rear section loose for interaction purposes. It even comes with some cut acrylic for the flashing lights on top!

Very characterful boarded up property. Great for nefarious deeds!!

One of my favorite pieces is the petrol station which is simple but with some lovely little details that really add to it. Its even got handles on the pump. I opted to leave the pump section and forecourt roof unglued as they fit easily into the inside of the building for storage.

HQ for the police. This has nice detailing on the walls and the front columns are a nice touch.

One very cool comic shop complete with a couple of tables and comic racks. Also a bizarre design on the roof. Alien landing pad? :-)

Oh yes this is going to be done out in Col. Saunders colours!

This kit, whilst being a bit trickier to build, is absolutely corking! Also it is incredible value for money given its size.

Finally just a couple of roof top pieces. Simple but great for adding that extra something to the urban scenery.

Now to paint the frigging things. Umm. Painting mojo has proven elusive over the last six months.

Must. Try. Harder.
