6th edition virginity lost

Please see the photographic evidence of the classic "I am new to 6th edition" pose, or an orks eye view of the next strafing run :)

More Flames of war stuff painted

So, with my hobby time under pressure like never before, I have decided to crack on and still do what I can!  So herewith find the latest tales of derring-do from the painting table....

First up, the Soviets.  I saw this first lot on Maelstrom and they were a bit of an impulse purchase on the basis they looked like fun.  Less than a couple of quid per pack, I thought they were worth a punt.  So I got around to basing them up, painting them and using them on the tabletop..... And they were great!  What were they?  Tank crew.  Yep, utterly unnecessary and make no difference to the tabletop as "bailed out" and "bogged down" markers come with the dice sets that I have.  But a couple of games against Nick from a few moons ago showed that they make the tabletop look smashing as my crews spend plenty of time hanging around outside their tanks not wanting to get back in!  Red bases to show they don't "exist on the tabletop and I was so impressed that I've bought some German crew for my other army too :)
"Dimitri, should we get back in our tank?"
"Not a chance Sergei, we can have a picnic at the edge of this wood instead!"

In the interests of transparency, the crews were painted before the family expansion, but these next two items were all painted afterwards.  They helped keep me sane :)

First up are some lend lease AA carriers.  I have no plan for including these in any particular army, they'd just been hanging around for ages so I thought I'd better get them painted or they'd be there for ever!

You'll have to forgive the background..... A nursery prospectus :)
US army warpaint spray, nuln oil wash, pick out tyres, crew, weapons, etc and add some transfers and AA units 15, 16 and 17 are ready for action!

Next up was another item that I have no particular plan for using.  In fact, I need another 6 to make a useful sized platoon.... But I decided that instead of the old gamer "I'm going to buy everything I need before I start painting approach and then find it all looks a bit daunting to ever start it" I decided to paint these three and then as and when I get the next ones they'll not be too tough to do.  These aremore lend lease vehicles but British universal carriers this time.  I really like the Russian passengers that come with these models and they certainly make them look the part!

These look like fun to drive!
Khaki grey and green grey mix to get an armour colour that I was happy with, paint the crew and passengers with my normal infantry scheme and wash away.  Fun little models.

Bit odd for me to paint stuff I don't know when I'll use, but with the limited hobby time available to me, I wanted to enjoy it and I just felt like painting this little lot.  And if you think these are odd, just wait for my next update :)

Infinity has landed!

The Silverfox mentioned some time ago that he and his son had gotten some Infinity starter sets......then it went quiet for some time.

Sadly my head was turned by some releases earlier this year and this is where I find myself now.
Yup. Hard cash wopped out on a new system that we've never played before. At least this time I can actually blame the Silverfox. Oh...and so can the Silverback as I hear he caved in as well and brought some Pan-Oc. ;-)

Lovely figures but god are they fiddly and labour intensive to put together. One of the Dakini Tacbots had nine metal parts. I would mind but it is only 28mm!! Still they look cool and I am looking forward to painting them. Might be somewhat of a challenge as the details on the figures are tiny. They have a very true scale feel to them which is a change from "I've got an enormous hero head" scale of GW. Don't get me wrong. I like GW figs but these are so much more......umm....graceful?

Now we just need to work out when we can get a game in!

Getting things finished!

Yup! I'm still trying to get the masses of bits and bobs done. It is going to be a long haul but posting finished things does give a helpful boost to ones moral! One of the King & Kerr buildings finished and the Cafe De Normandie from Warbases. Both were lovely to paint with the detail really making it a quick job on the King & Kerr one.

But. The K & K ones take a little work to get to get to this stage. I had one or two with what seemed to be miscast windows so I had to cut all the windows out on those ones and there was a fair amount of flash on certain parts. Not unsurmountable but a bit of a pain. Hopefully I'll be able to get the rest of the king and Kerr ones done this week as well.

Dr Red

I finally got round to finishing....apart from a quick coat of army painter to varnish him.

He was a pretty nice figure to paint but then again all the Pulp City figures I've painted so far have been. ;-)

Undercoating

Undercoating is one of those annoying things at the moment. I'm not getting a lot of time for hobbying so I really don't want to waste it messing around with my airbrush to undercoat figures. This means that I'm slaved to spray undercoat until I have a whole afternoon to amke using the airbrush worth the while.

I'd wondered if there was a cheap option for undercoat sprays and this curiosity led me to find myself in the local cars spares shop looking at their massive variety of paints. Clearly most of them are unsuited for any wargaming related use but the little old tin in the picture caught my eye. Oh yes it did. ;-)

Matt White acrylic spray 400ml for £5.49.

Lets compare this to GW spray.

Matt White acrylic spray 400ml for £9.50rrp.

One little old fashion plastic gretchin got the vote to be the first victim test figure and I have to say that part of me thought it was goodbye when he was plonked outside ready to get a blast of this stuff.

The gretchin is still smiling! So was I once I had tested a few normal figure paints, washes and inks on him a couple of days later. Its fine. Perfectly fine for undercoating figures and at half the price.....well I'm sold.

It actually even smells like GW undercoat and part of me would not be surprised if it is the same manufacturer behind both brands ultimately.

Is Fimo the answer? **Picture Update**

Years ago I made up some textured bases with the intention of maybe casting them. Needless to say that I never got around to that. :-/

However....last year an old friend called Junta (who happens to follow this blog) introduced me to 'Instamold'. Now this stuff goes soft in hot water, takes impressions of surface details and is re-useable. Great! It got me to thinking that I could use it to take impressions of the tops of my textured bases and then use the instamold as press-molds. Guess what? It worked but the question came down to what should be used to press into the molds.

My first thought was Green Stuff but it turned out to be a bit to spongey for that. I then tried some Pro-Create and it turned out okay so I thought I'd probably end up using that. However, whilst mooching around in an art shop I came across some Fimo heat hardened polymer clay. I'd seen the stuff before but never used it. What caught my eye was the fact that it was in a metallic colour. So I decided to give it a try and it actually works really quite well. Easy to press into the mold and then set-off with a 30 minute blast (110 degrees) in the oven. They will need a quick trim but the Fimo isn't brittle and sands fairly well.

So these little lovelies will be going on top of my possibly, maybe soon to be addressed pile of Infinity figures. Sadly in this photo the base toppers are up side down so you can't see the deck grating textures.
***EDIT UPDATE***
