Game 36

More 40K as we had the taste for it!

Game 36 used the diagonal deployment, the mission cards and objective markers. Junt's IG stood shoulder to shoulder with the scarlet and gold of the heroic Howling Griffons.

This isn't a bias report honest.

Arrayed against them were Urn's soulless clanking Necrons bringing with them the unpleasant whiff of damp compost. Urging them on and whispering evils ideas were the Silverfox's forces of chaos including ..... shudder....the Khorne Berserkers.

From the outset both forces pushed forward with a lot of fire being concentrated in the centre. The power Demolishers made some early gains against the Khorne forces but the Necrons proved unrelenting once again.

On the Imperial right flank the marines pushed forward against a formation of chaos cultists hoping to break them and gain some objectives.

However the dark forces had focused their attacks in the centre and the berserkers dealt out some horrible damage.

Despite the Ogryns helping mop up the berserkers the dark forces took the day.

Great game. Poor old Silverfox took the brunt of the fire as the Necron blob squads make themselves less appealing as a target with their unwillingness to STAY DOWN!!! Gits!

Game 35

Game 35 can be summed up with a roar of Space Wolf bikes and the clatter of the multitude of bolters, power fists and storm shields that they can carry.

Then, when they've finished shooting you....

...they hit you with soooooo many chainswords!

Not even a C'tan can halt their advance!

Short and brutal shoeing!

Game 33

Another round of Nu-40K at Urns.

This time Junts IG teaming with those pesky undying Necrons whilst The eldritch Farseer Silverfox added his eldar to mine.

I didn't bring a Wraithknight this time cos......god didn't they go on about it last time! ;-)

The Tanks of the IG made themselves a target for the Eldar lances partly due to the Necrons stubborn unwillingness to DIE!!!

Don't remember the result but we were enjoying the new rules.

TTFN!

Game 32

We've been playing pretty consistently all year.

Blogging about it? Not so much.

So to catch up.

Game 32

See that Necron flyer?

No you don't! First shots of the game! Tee Hee!

Nu 40K had arrived and a gathering of minds took place at Urn's on a Saturday night.

Urn and the Silverfox with Necrons and Khorne vs Me and Gareth with Eldar and Space Puppies. There was much leafing of pages and checking of stats but at the end we concluded that we liked it. Much simplified and it felt quick and easy.

The main thing we learned was just how horrible Khornate Berserkers are in 8th edition.

Absolute filth!

New 40k edition, new army!

As that's the unofficial motto for all wargamers, I thought I'd dive in with a new army to see how it plays.... and the winner was Necrons!

These poor misunderstood chaps have had a bit of a journey.... I think most of the troops were from eBay auctions originally and were a mix of colours and basing.  One of my mates then added a bunch of vehicles when they came out and painted them in a spiffy metallic blue colour.... and then decided Necrons weren't for him and passed them onto me for a very good price to keep them in our gaming group.  I subsequently decided I had too many armies (as you do) and passed them onto a friend for his son to use.  His son has decided he's going to follow the chaos gods, so shiny metal evil chaps were no use to him and so I got a whole bunch of chaos models together and swapped them back.  So I decided to get on with it and make them a cohesive force for 8th edition!

My approach when painting armies is to get the bulk of the rank and file done together as I really dislike using unpainted models on the tabletop.  I'm fine for them to be used whilst painting happens, but I make sure that every time I use them, there is some progress. The gaming should then encourage me to paint more and the virtuous gaming/painting circle sustains itself!

I spent a couple of hours repairing the large warrior contingent and I found I had enough to paint up two max sized units of 20.  I do like to start with maximum sized units as they can always then be split out as required.
Classic metallic base as I knew I could recreate it across the army quickly.  To this I added a brass head, shoulder pads and chestplate.  I wanted a cold brass colour to keep them looking menacing and I'm pleased with his they came out.  The classic Necron warrior only has one pose, but I think that suits their relentless nature rather well as these guys are the 40k equivalent of skeleton hordes.

Next up.... another 20 looking almost identical

The main difference is the brass gun barrels so that I can tell them apart if there is a swirling melee on the battlefield.  I'm not a huge fan of the green acrylic the classic Necrons have on their guns, the effect just looks wrong on a 28mm miniature to my eye, so it was nice that doing my overspray for the repaint helped me fix this.  I think GW probably agree these days, as none of the more modern sculpts in the Necron range use acrylic, this paint job should tie the warriors in with their newer sculpted bretheren.

The new rules mean these chaps spend quite a lot of time on the tabletop as "reanimation protocols" works every turn a warrior is dead now instead of being a one shot pseudo invulnerable save.  With the bulk of my menacing warriors done, I'll be turning my attention to the more specialised areas of the army next - HQs and Immortals next up I think.

Back in the Groove

Well it has been a while, but since my step back into work I have finally found some time to get painting again.

Since I sold my Sisters of Battle Army for a nice large lump sum, I have invested it in adding to my existing forces.  My plan is quiet simple:
  • Bring the Necrons up to date with the new release.
  • Enhance my Tyranids into a force that can be deployed in a variety of ways, not just based around the Swarmlord.
  • Have enough Orks to face Nick or Nathan at a 5,000 point game...... and that is a lot of orks.
So with those plans in my mind, I have started work on multiple fronts.

After a couple of bargains, I have 60+ ork boyz to paint, plus another 30 burnas/lootas etc and another 30 grots :)  Oh and an ork flyer!

Then I landed an exceptionally painted Nid army, which means to keep a consistent these I need to repaint a number of models to keep them all the same - not much work but it will keep me busy!

You can see the light blue of a necron test figure - I need to acquire some new Blue wash to finish that and the same blue on the pilot of the barge.  I hope you can see the rust weathering on all the necron vehicles (done using the hairspray technique).

Was that the sound of an Alarm Clock?

They're back...

PX-0967 Army of Necrons
Sorry couldn't resist cos, y'know, resistance is futile.
Flayed Ones - Happy I have these as don't like the new Finecast ones
I'll stop now. If not then feel free to Delete...

Wraiths & Tomb Spyders just added
Ahem. I love Necrons. Have done ever since I got a free metal Necron on the cover of a White Dwarf a long time ago (2nd Edition?). I used an all metal army during the first "Codex" which I think was in White Dwarf again and consisted of Lord, Warriors, Immortals, Scarabs and Destroyers.

Then came the first real Codex and I bought the army box so that I could get the Codex early. The army you see in these pictures is the one that was awakened from that Codex. All except the Wraiths and Tomb Spyders which have been painted this weekend: well they were in a box and looking forlorn plus I need the army for Spoils of War Campaign at the end of November!

And then they went to sleep again. They were not too interesting to play at times because the Phase Out rule meant that your opponent usually ignored the mission and just tried to kill enough Necrons to make you lose.

But now they're back. Remember, remember the 5th of November because that's the day the Universe will shake as a thousand billion alarm clocks go off and the Necrons finally awaken from their slumber...
