More designs!

After designing the submarine last year my thoughts had moved back to a concept that had been rolling around my noggin for a time.

I’d been think about a set of walkways, mostly inspired by Star Wars, could be interconnected and had additional pieces to add flavour to the set. Now walkways have been done plenty of times before so I wanted to do something that made the set different.

I toyed with the idea for a while until my first eureka moment which was when I cottoned onto the idea that the joins could be handled using a ‘jigsaw’ piece connection that was echoed throughout the set. So I merrily came up with an interface and proceeded to try and create the walkways that would be the constituent parts of the set.

Whilst drawing up the intial walkways themselves I bumped into the question of hand rails. Now the Star Wars setting isn’t always particularly strong on handrails as they seem to hamper the leaping and fighting for the Jedi and their enemies. However I wanted them because it wasn’t just going to be for Star Wars Legion, I wanted it to have a wider sci-fi use.

Then I had the second eureka moment when I ended up handling how to interface the handrails between pieces. It became apparent that they needed to marry up and be inter-connectable like the jigsaw connections for the main body of the walkways.

After quite a bit of jiggery and swearing I finally managed to get a working design and merrily set about design the rest of the set. Two weeks later and it was done and I was excited to get them into production…..which for a variety of reasons hasn’t happened until this year.

I’m pretty happy how they have turned out. The kind folks at Blotz made some, in hindsight, very sensible tweaks regarding the height which has finished off the set just right.

Given how busy they are at Blotz getting ready for Salute I offered to paint up the set for the stall. Couldn’t wait to get my mitts on it!

I’m really pleased with it! Now to see what people make of it at Salute!

Deadzone scenery

Managed to get some of the resin scenery finished that was part of the Deadzone Kickstarter that the GOG's had partaken of.

Really nice pieces of scatter that were fairly good fun to pop together and paint.

Particularly fun was the console once the floaty holo displays were added.

Now onto the next of a long list of projects!!

Stuff got done and stuff got brought!

Seeing my faction for Deadzone has yet to materialize I thought it best to get the scenery done and out of the way so I'm free when the figures actually do turn up.

The scenery itself is pretty good but I would question the small number of the more useful joining widgets.

In other news.......I failed a willpower test. This little lot upgrades my pile of Spartan kit from "Hill" to "Escarpment". Only a few more purchases to reach "Mountain". I really must get started on all this!

Deadzone start....

After the excitement of the big roll off for factions, I decided to get stuck into the Orx Marauders straight away. "Why on earth would you do that?" I hear you ask "Eddie doesn't even have his faction yet and Fox won't do his until March/April!". The simple answer is that I didn't really like them very much.....

Odd, right? Well, no matter how hard I tried not to do so, I couldn't help but work out my preferred forces for Deadzone, even though this wouldn't affect the result one jot and possibly lead to disappointment. On my list, the marauders were dead last, even behind the asterians, and we don't even know what they look like yet.

So, I decided that better than leaving them in their bags and not getting excited about them, I would leap straight in and try to like them. So, what did I learn? That I still don't like how messy the mould lines, etc are in mantic's figures. Say what you like about GW ( and I often do), their figures are so clean and well put together these days that they really set the bar. This issue would be the same for all of the factions though, so wasn't a knock on the marauders. I gave up on cleaning them and so have stuck them together and will clean the worst lines off at some point before spraying.....

Without further ado, here they are..... You do get a large amount of kit with them and I only had to ask for one extra piece that was missing, so kudos to Mantic for that.
